Installing The Floppy Disk Drive

FLOPPY DRIVE INSTALLATION

The Floppy Disk Drive installation is rather simple and straight forward. After removing the system unit cover and finding the drive,
take note either mentally or by drawing a diagram of just how the drive is installed.

Be sure to ground yourself to remove any and all ESD or Electrical Static Discharge from your body and clothes.Follw these steps in installing a new Floppy Drive.

REMOVING THE OLD DRIVE

Locate the screws securing the drive to the case and remove each.Place the screws in a small container so they won't roll away
and get lost.

Slide the drive halfway forward throw the front opening of the system unit.In some cases, you may have to slide the drive to the rear, depending on the type of cases you have.Remove the Power Cable by grasping the connector and not the wire.

Remove the cable by confirmly pulling the cable to the rear with a slight side to side motion until the small cable is free.

Perform the same procedure to remove the Ribbon cable.Be patient and not damage the pins at the rear of the drive. Pulling firmly but gently with cause the cable to disconnect within problems.

Take note of the floppy Controller and the cable connected to it, just in case it should become loose. The drive can now be removed from
the computer and put away.If the old drive is working, you may consider
installing it as a second floppy drive.

INSTALLING A NEW FLOPPY DRIVE

Installing your new Floppy Drive is in the reverse order of removing the old drive.

Slide the new drive in halfway or all the way, depending on the type of system unit case.Re-connect the Ribbon Cable into the 32 pin connector at the rear of the drive.

Now you can re-connect the small cable from the power supply.Take note to ensure that both cables are pushed all
the way in.

Slide the drive in completely if you have not done so already.Secure the drive to the case with the screws you placed in the small box.Replace the system unit cover and turn on the computer.

Your computer should recoginze the drive from bootup and should work just fine.Check to see if the PC is recognizing the the drive by looking at the My Computer screen in Windows. From there you can
see if the drive is working as well.

Its that simple when it comes to removing and installing the Floppy Drive. If you love computers take the time to remove the system unit cover and study the components inside.

Knowing the components and how they work will no doubt become quite valuable should you need assistance with repair or a friend ask for your assistance.
