FEATURE ARTICLE - Installing
Your
Power Supply by Otis F. Cooper
------------------------------------------------------------
POWER SUPPLY
INSTALLATION
The computer's Power
supply can and will put
all your computing to a grinding halt should it
fail. You should find out the type of power supply
in your computer and the makes and models you
can purchase to replace it.
Should the power supply fail you won't have to
panic and rush to a computer store being at the
mercy of the salesman or technician.Check your
computer's manual for your type of power supply.
You can also surf the web and locate your PC's
type to gather the same information.
Once you know what type of power supply you
need should it go on the blink, get hold of a good
PC toolkit to remove the system unit cover. If
you don't have a PC toolkit,as most of us don't,
get yourself a phillip and/or flathead screwdriver
to remove the retaining screws securing the cover
to the system unit case.Follow these steps to
install your power supply.
REMOVE THE CASE
Use the screwdriver to remove the screws that
secure the cover to the system unit case.As a
pre-caution take the time to ground yourself to
remove any electrical static charge from your
body. This is done by touching a doorknob or
any metal object that is grounded.
REMOVE THE OLD POWER SUPPLY
With the system unit open, the power supply
should be mounted in
the case at the rear of
the system unit.Take note of how it is installed
in your system and draw a diagram if needed.
A diagram will make installing the new power
supply a breeze should you forget where a
screw,connection,or clip should go.
Remove the screws securing the power supply
and disconnect all connections from the drives
and any other devices.Finally take
great care
in removing the large motherboard connector
and the ON-OFF
device from the case on
some older models.
This connector should have a clip that holds it
in place and may need to be held back while
using a slight rocking motion the disconnect
the cable from the motherboard.Lift the device
out of the case and put it away.
INSTALL THE NEW POWER SUPPLY
Place the new power supply in the same location
of the old unit.First connect the large motherboard
connector with care.Check to be certain it has
been pushed in completely and any clips are in
place.Take a look
at the diagram you made when
removing the device for reference if needed.
Secure the device to the case with the retaining
screws taking care not to use too much force
when tightening the screws.
Connect all drive connectors and check-double
your work to be sure nothing was left loose or
disconnected.Attempt to move the power supply
to be sure it is tight.
Replace the cover to the system unit and connect
all peripherals such as the printer.Turn on the PC
and check to be sure all drives and other devices
are receiving power.
Installing the power supply is rather easy procedure
and once you know how to do it yourself, you
will save big on future repair costs.Take the time
to see how to install every component in your PC
and you will be able to get your ailing computer
up and running without getting a major headache
in the process.
