Awesome Windows Startup-Shutdown Procedures

What a pain to have to sit and wait for your Operating System to boot up.You push the ON switch and the computer begins to whin, crack, etc.

Take the time to understand the process of your computer booting up when power first begins to enter the power supply.Knowing what happens when the computer starts will help you to find and fix startup problems much faster.

Just exactly what happens from the very second you pushed the ON button and the operating system boots. And when you pushed or click on Shut Down, what takes place behind the scenes of Windows.

FIRST...You press the power switch and electricity flows through the power supply which converts the Alternating Current (AC) into low voltage Direct Current (DC).

SECOND...The Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) is loaded into memory by a Read Only Memory (ROM) chip and run the Power On Self Test (POST). Here is where the computer looks for the Central Processing Unit (CPU) Memory and the Video Card. The POST is
performed by all computers as it checks itself and looks for all hardware it needs

THIRD...The BIOS tells the video card to begin showing images. The POST checks the first megabyte of memory for errors. The BIOS tell's Windows to load. You can stop and allow the Bios to load Windows Step-By-Step to see if there are any problems or errors with any device drivers.

FOURTH....The Device Drivers and other parts of the Operating System are initialized. The Windows logon screen appears.Whsould the computer freeze during this process, you can re-boot the computer and run the step by step boot up procedure to see if any errors appear while the PC is loading the operating system.

FIFTH....The operating system now loads Terminate And Stay Resident programs (TSR) such as the any Antivirus software and the operating system is now complete. When you are finished using your computer you can either Shut It Down or allow it to run in the
standby mode. This allows the monitor and hard drive to shutdown
after a set period of time.

It is important to understand just what happens in the boot process so that you can respond to in failures that may occur. You may be in for a rough day if you see error messages buring the boot process.

Be certain you have taken the time to create at least two operating system startup disks should something go wrong. You will have a bad day without this disk should your operating system crash.
