Maintenance Of Keyboards And Monitors

It is simply awesome to not only remove the cover of your own computer and be able to easily recognize each and every component, but should youever have the chance to upgrade or repair a friend's computer, the rewards (and any extra income) will be great.

In this issue we take a look at the Keyboard and the Monitor. While the
maintenance of the keyboard is rather simple, it should not be overlooked.

Maintenance of the Monitor includes not much over cleaning and
ventilation but again, the Monitor's welfare should be taken seriously.

Concerning pc maintenance, never forget the common preventive
maintenance procedures of Scandisk, Disk Defragment, and more.
It is so easy to blow these procedures off and before you know it, your
computer begins to slow down, operate sluggishly, etc.

Don't worry, we will get to the software side of your computer system
as well. Recognizing the Windows Registry, the Win INI, the Autoexec.
Bat file and more will be covered so that you won't be in the dark when
it comes to knowing all about your operating system.

What's That...Let's Get Going With The Keyboard And
Monitor Articles ALREADY......Okay......Let's Go

Preventive Maintenance Of The Keyboard

Mild household cleaning solutions, window cleaning liquids, soap and water are often used to clean computer surfaces. When using any cleaning solution you should first clean a small inconspicuous area. Try the solution on the back of the system unit case for example. This is to be sure the solution won't cause any harm to the surface.

When cleaning the top of the keyboard, pour or spray the cleaning solution on the cloth, not the keyboard. You don't want any type of liquid getting inside the keyboard.

Clean the Keycaps with a cotton swab and alcohol or another approved cleaning solution. Your keycaps will get dusty and grime covered through normal use. Don't put too much solution on the swab. It may drip down into the keyboard.

You can purchase a can of compressed air or a small vacuum cleaner to remove dust and dirt from the keyboard. Use compressed air in small bursts and blow in a direction outward.

Take a good long look at the Keyboard's Cord and Connector. Check for dirt collection and make sure in pins are not broken or bent. Should your keyboard prove defective, you should simply purchase a new one rather than considering having it repaired. Keyboards are inexpensive and you install them simply by connecting to the rear of the computer.

Preventive Maintenance Of The Monitor

The Video Monitor is the component that will need the most cleaning. Computer Monitors are magnets for dirt and dust. The electrical charge generated by the monitor attracts dust and dirt particles in the cleanest environment.

Check the monitor's manual before cleaning to see if the screen has any type of protective cover. Use a soft cloth and household window cleaning solution to clean the monitor screen. Be sure to turn the monitor off first. The electrical charge won't have the chance to cause any damage.

Pour or spray the solution on the cloth, not the screen. Fabric softener sheets are good antistatic wipes that picks up dust and dirt from the screen. Use the sheet to wipe away dirt from the monitor case as well. While you're at it, take a look at the Monitor Cable to be sure the connector has no broken or bent pins.

Using compressed air to clean the monitor can help but be sure not to let the dust find its way into the system unit or the floppy drive. Should the Monitor fail, you may want to take it to a technician to check the fuse. You should not remove the cover of the Monitor yourself since a strong charge may be present long after the Monitor has been turned off.

Dusting the monitor removes layers of dust which acts like an insulation and causes heat to buildup. This heat causes electronic components in the monitor to wear out much faster than they normally would. Don't place your monitor under hanging cabinets. But placed them in open areas where they are well ventilated. Don't use the top of your monitor as a storage area since this can block air from cooling the monitor.

The Monitor is connected to a Video Card mounted inside the system unit. Preventive maintenance may include checking the Video Card to be sure it has not worked itself loose by the absence of the retaining screw. Also, visually check the connector at the end of the Video Card.

Performing Preventive Maintenance can only do so much. No matter how much maintenance is perform, problems will occur. You can't prevent problems from occurring but you can be alert to them. When you turn on the computer, listen for strange sounds. Pay attention to error messages that may appear on the screen.
